Social media trends to expect in 2018

In 2017, we have seen more and more brands attempt to connect with audiences across a wide range of social platforms. With so many brands out there trying to capture their audiences attention, it seems that user attention spans are continuing do decrease to a mere 8 seconds. [Social Media Marketing Trends 2018] With so much content in-front of a users eyes every day, it’s vital to build a brand that can work in this fast-paced environment.

Video Video Video

In a hugely mobile-dominated social culture, video has grown to become our number 1 consumption. According to Smart Insights, in 2017, 90% of all content shared on social media was video. It seems that brands not offering short videos throughout their social platforms are missing out on great potential. With the introduction of Instagram & Facebook live, we can’t wait to see what’s in-store in 2018 in the video department.

Could we be more influenced?

Influencer marketing has grown to be THE primary social media marketing tool used by many corporations. We do warn you, the influencer market is already flooded, so choose wisely when searching for the right influencer to represent your brand. Consumers are looking for authenticity from their influencers, authenticity is key when aiming to increase engagement rates and genuine interest. Who else is sick of seeing those questionable teeth whitening products by? Can I get an amen?

Augmented Reality

With the recent launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X with it’s true-depth camera and 3D mapping, users are now more able to access the virtual world. We have already seen Snapchat introduce the new augmented reality feature, allowing users to access Bitmoji and password protect themselves via facial recognition.  Augmented reality could see the introduction of virtual stores, users will be able to visit these stores, try products out and buy them online, creating a whole new brand experience us marketers are excited to get our hands on!

Ahh those disappearing stories

With Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook now introducing disappearing stories, many brands are utilising this feature in a whole new way, adding authenticity to their image. High-quality content is a must here, with 250 million stories everyday, it’s vital to make yours count. We encourage some strategic planning prior to entering this ephemeral atmosphere, of-course, we can help here :)

So our advice is, plan your campaigns well, schedule what is possible but wherever you can, have fun with your audience, show them the true character of your brand. Play with designs, ideas, and see what works best.

If you were scrolling through social media on Tuesday, you would have noticed an abundance of blank black tiles in your feed, posted by celebrities, brands, and friends alike. Since Tuesday, there's been a big debate about whether this was actually harmful to the Black Lives Matter cause, blocking the live stream of information coming from the protesters in the streets. . Social media is a powerful source to spread information around the world but can be easily misunderstood if you don't take the time to research the latest trend, before jumping onto it yourself. . What was the real intent behind #BlackoutTuesday and who started it? Read our blog post (link in bio) to find out 👉 www.bornsocial.co/post/blackouttuesday .
